Book on the History of Activism in U.P. Launched
IBON NEWS. As the country’s premiere state university celebrates its Centennial, a group of progressive educators, writers and social activists from the University of the Philippines (UP) launches a book that chronicles the 100 years of activism in UP.
The book, ‘Serve the People: Ang Kasaysayan ng Radikal na Kilusan sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas’ is a compilation of essays that tells the history of the radical movement and activism in UP from 1908-2008.
A project of the progressive teachers groups CONTEND and Alliance of Concerned Teachers, the book draws from the perspective of over 40 writers who became part of UP’s colorful history of serving the people.
The essays include those written by martial law activist Antonio Tagamolila, Renato Constantino, Jose Maria Sison and Julieta de Lima, Rene Villanueva, Joi Barrios, Elmer A. Ordoñez, Luis Teodoro, Bonifacio P. Ilagan, Dante Ambrosio, Elizabeth Principe, among others.
Edited by Bienvenido Lumbera, Judy Taguiwalo, Roland Tolentino, Ramon Guillermo and Arnold Alamon, the book is also a compilation of commentaries, personal journeys, songs, poems and images depicting UP’s historical contribution to the people’s movement.
‘Serve the People’, published by IBON Books, portrays a true and meaningful commemoration of the University’s Centennial Celebration and shows that activism in UP remains as potent and vibrant as ever. #
