PANGMASA and Nicanor Perlas Supports Plight of PUP and UP Students
Partido ng Marangal na Sambayanan (PANGMASA), the political party of presidentiable Nicanor Perlas issued its official statement regarding education and the current plight of PUP and UP students regarding tuition fee and other issues.
Here is the official statement:
TUITION FEE AND STUDENTS RIGHTS DEBATE: SYMPTOMS OF A LARGER PROBLEM IN EDUCATION
I am alarmed with what I see on television and with the reports of the current protests of students in PUP and in the University of the Philippines. It is a show of disgust for both a political and educational system that had been eaten up by a corrupt and demoralized government.
Partido ng Marangal na Sambayanan (PANGMASA) and I am supporting the stand of the students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines that the current tuition fee increase should not be implemented. It is a grave injustice to the students and to the basic right of our citizens to education.
We also take a strong stand pushing for meaningful participation of students and parents in the decision making of State Colleges and Universities particularly on tuition fee increase and other policies that are affecting them.
In order for this to happen education should be in the cultural realm and not in the political realm as it now is. Thus, the quality and content of what is taught to students is not CONTROLLED by the state.
Solving the problem
The 5th Pillar of our platform is to Promote Holistic Education and Inner Change which places an educational system geared towards the realization of the full potential of the human being as a member of a family, community, and society as a whole.
Besides developing economic, political and cultural literacy and competence, education he says should promote human well-being, develop emotional and mental intelligence as well as moral and spiritual potentials.
In order to do this we will:
1. Identify the top 100 secondary educational institutions of the country, provide support for their innovative practices, document and disseminate their creative educational practices, and enter into partnerships with them as hubs of educational excellence.
2. Do an in-depth study, involving all stakeholders, as basis for the gradual transfer educational services to the cultural non-profit sector of society especially in partnership with the community.
3. Create the policy environment for strengthening the role of private education in all levels of the school system.
4. Increase the usage of educational vouchers to widen the choices of parents. Increase focus beyond just quantity of education services to quality of education services including more holistic educational approaches that develop multi-talented, creative, critical-thinking, socially-oriented students and citizens
By a holistic approach to these problems in education we will be able to provide affordable education as a right of every citizen that goes beyond our generation into the next.
