Senator Lito Lapid Refiles Bill for Left-handed Filipinos
As one of his first moves in the 15th Congress, reelected Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid on Friday refiled a measure he authored to promote greater awareness and consideration for left-handed Filipinos.
Lapid, who won his second term in Senate during the May 10 polls, filed on Friday Senate Bill No. 31 or the “Comprehensive Handedness Act of 2010″ to call for “educational programs that (are) responsive to the handedness preference of students.”
“Everyday, left-handed people struggle in a right-handed world… The problem is that the majority of people are right-handed and various products and tools are often made for right-handed individuals,” the senator said in his legislation.
The said measure directs the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to implement guidelines ensuring that schools in the country provide left-handed desks and educational materials to their left-handed students.
The bill also directs the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) to provide appropriate arm chairs to left-handed students who take licensure exams.
SB 31 likewise calls for the formation of a Philippine Handedness Research and Training Institute (PHRTI) to further research on left-handed Filipinos, and for the nationwide information campaign for left-handers.
“This humble measure is being proposed with the hope that this intervention will address the horizons of concerns faced by our left-handed school children who have to struggle and face difficulties in a right-handed-oriented school system,” Lapid said in the measure.
