Running priest leads citizens' Valentine Run for a Cause to court Senator-Judges, express ‘true feelings’ about CJ Corona
Manila, Philippines - RUNNING priest Fr. Robert Reyes led 100 runners in a 10-kilometer Valentine Run for a Cause from Taft Avenue in Manila to the Supreme Court and to the Philippine Senate on Valentine’s Day as the group expressed their true feelings about impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona.
The runners gathered at the Open Park at the corner of Kalaw Avenue and Taft Avenue in Manila at 9 a.m. with the run starting at 10 a.m. and joined by students from UP Manila IMonitor as they made a short stop at the Supreme Court and the Department of Justice (DOJ) buildings on Padre Faura for a brief program.
At the Philippine Senate in Pasay City, the group held a brief program to express their true feelings about the Chief Justice whom they said is not their ideal Chief Justice.
“Ang tipo kong Chief Justice ay hindi nagsisinungaling at iyo ng walang itinatago. Tapat sa mamamayan at sambayananing Pilipino. In this day of love and hearts, we ask 'where is the love? love for our country, for reforms, transparency and accountability?. Where is the love for truth and for justice?" Reyes said.
Roland Cabigas, Managing Director of La Liga said that what the country needs and in fact deserves is a Chief Justice with an unblemished reputation as a public servant, honest and true to his word as the highest official of the Judicial Branch of the government. "Is Chief Justice Corona the best Chief Justice that the judiciary can offer particularly in light of the evidence of his outright dishonesty," Cabigas added.
The Valentine Run for a Cause is citizens’ response to the latest development and legal maneuverings of the camp of Corona to stop the Senate impeachment court form opening his dollar account by maliciously accusing Malacanang of allegedly bribing the Senator-Judges to favor the prosecution panel’s motion.
Corona has filed and secured a temporary restraining order from the Supreme Court stopping the impeachment trial. Stopping the on-going impeachment trial will only bolster the people’s suspicion that Corona has acquired “unexplained wealth” and is “living beyond his means” as a magistrate of the Supreme Court and is now moving heaven and earth to stop Philippine Senate from opening his dollar account.
PALEA President Jerry Rivera, for his part, said the SC TRO was meant to stop the Senator Judges from opening a “can of worms” about Corona’s lavish lifestyle. I-Monitor Terry Ridon, for his part, said the legal maneuverings and tactic of Corona makes them feel that Corona is really not their ideal Chief Justice – one with impeccable character and integrity and “walang itinatago sa taong bayan.”
The group wants the impeachment trial of Corona to take its natural course without the intervention of the Supreme Court, which they believe, is naturally biased for Corona.
